Helping Calgary clients find a therapist their benefits will cover

Many Calgary clients have workplace benefits, and some have a health spending account too, so plenty of searches start with the plan rather than the therapist. With counselling therapy still unregulated in Alberta, the credential you hold, and how clearly you explain it, decides whether those searches lead to you.

How people in Calgary search for covered therapy

Calgary searches often lead with the credential a client's plan names. Others name a community: the Beltline, Kensington, Inglewood, Mission, or Airdrie, Cochrane, and Okotoks just outside the city.

Because plans in Alberta often list psychologists and social workers by name, some clients search for those titles even when a counsellor would suit them well. If you're a counsellor, a page that explains your credential, and how to check it against a plan, meets those searches honestly.

Searches like these:

  • registered psychologist Calgary covered by benefits
  • RSW therapist Calgary
  • counsellor Calgary health spending account
  • therapist Beltline direct billing
  • therapist after EAP Calgary

Which credentials plans cover in Alberta

Alberta sits between Ontario and BC: psychologists and social workers are regulated, and counselling therapists are not yet.

  • R.Psych.

    Registered Psychologist

    College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP)

A regulated title. Provisional psychologists are also registered with CAP; some plans reimburse them and some don't.

  • RSW

    Registered Social Worker

Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW)

A regulated title in Alberta, and one plans often name.

  • CCC

    Canadian Certified Counsellor

Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA)

A national certification many Alberta counsellors hold. Plans differ on whether they accept it.

  • ACTA member

    Counselling therapist

Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA), a professional association

Counselling therapy isn't regulated in Alberta yet, so recognition of association membership varies from plan to plan.

In March 2024 the province named the College of Alberta Psychologists as the future home for counselling therapists. At the time of writing, that change hasn't been proclaimed and no date has been set. Until it is, counsellors rely on association credentials, and each plan decides which ones to accept.

Health spending accounts add another layer. They can be more flexible than a traditional plan, but they have their own eligibility rules, and those can hinge on the practitioner's credential. The honest answer on your website is the same either way: here's my credential, here's how to check.

Write your credential wording so it's easy to update. When regulation takes effect your title may change, and your website, directory profiles, and Google Business Profile should all change on the same day.

What your website should say about coverage

A Calgary fees page works well when the first two lines answer the plan question: your credential and who it's with, then “coverage depends on your plan, and here's what to ask”. Clients comparing providers in a hurry won't scroll for it.

If you're a counsellor, don't borrow a regulated title's language to seem covered. “Psychologist” and “social worker” are protected titles in Alberta. Describing your own credential accurately is both the rule and the more convincing choice.

If you work online across Alberta, say that near your fees too, so clients in Airdrie or Okotoks know they can book without the drive.

Sample wording to adapt
I'm a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Some extended health plans and health spending accounts reimburse sessions with a CCC; others don't. Before your first session, ask your plan whether a CCC is covered, what your yearly maximum is, and whether you need a referral.

Direct billing

Direct billing is a common question in Calgary, especially from clients used to it at physiotherapy. If you can bill some plans directly, say which ones.

If you can't, say you'll give a detailed receipt with your credential and number that clients can submit themselves. A plain, upfront answer keeps the question from becoming a reason to book elsewhere.

When EAP sessions run out

Many Calgary employers, including large energy and engineering firms, offer an EAP with a few short-term sessions. People search for a therapist after EAP when those sessions end, or when they'd rather see someone outside the EAP network.

A short paragraph on how to continue with you, and how to check whether their extended health plan or spending account applies, meets that search without naming an EAP you don't work with.

Your Calgary checklist

  • Your credential and who it's with, in the first two lines of your fees page
  • Provisional status stated plainly, if it applies
  • A line about health spending accounts and how to check eligibility
  • No regulated title you don't hold, anywhere on the site or in its page titles
  • Direct billing answered, and your receipts described
  • The Calgary communities and nearby towns you serve, or “online across Alberta”
  • A plan to update every profile the day counselling regulation takes effect

Then run your site through the free nine-point website checklist for therapists.

Common questions

Are counselling therapists regulated in Alberta?

Not yet. The province has named the College of Alberta Psychologists as the future regulator, but at the time of writing the change hasn't taken effect and no date has been announced. Many counsellors hold the CCC or belong to the Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta.

Do health spending accounts cover counselling in Alberta?

Sometimes. Each account has its own rules, and eligibility can depend on the practitioner's credential. Ask clients to check with their plan administrator, and give them your credential and number so they can.

Should I target “psychologist” keywords if I'm a counsellor?

No. “Psychologist” is a protected title in Alberta. Target the words that describe what you do and who you help, and explain your credential clearly so clients can check their coverage.

What should I update when counselling regulation takes effect?

Your title and credential wording everywhere it appears: your website, directory profiles, Google Business Profile, receipts, and email signature. Plan it now so it's an afternoon's work.
