Most Manitobans live in or around Winnipeg, but plenty of people looking for private therapy live in Brandon, Steinbach, Thompson, or a First Nation or farm hours away. Wherever they are, most want one thing answered before they book: will my plan help pay? Your website is the place to say, clearly, how your credential fits.
How people in Manitoba search for covered therapy
Winnipeg searches often name a neighbourhood, like St. Boniface, Osborne Village, or River Heights, while the rest of the province searches by town: Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler, Portage la Prairie, Selkirk, Thompson, or The Pas.
French-language searches matter here. St. Boniface and several rural communities have long-standing francophone populations, and a French page that covers fees and coverage, not just a note that you speak French, gives those clients something to find.
In the north and in many First Nations communities, in-person options are scarce. Clear information about video sessions, and about NIHB if you're enrolled, answers questions people may not think to search for.

Which credentials plans cover in Manitoba
Manitoba regulates psychologists, social workers, and psychiatric nurses. Counselling therapy has no provincial regulator yet.
- C.Psych.
Psychologist
Psychological Association of Manitoba (PAM), the regulator
Despite the word “association”, PAM is the regulatory body. It also registers psychological associates, some approved for independent practice, and plans may treat them differently.
- RSW
Registered Social Worker
Manitoba College of Social Workers (MCSW)
The Social Work Profession Act protects the title “social worker”. Many plans reimburse clinical social work, sometimes on its own line.
- RPN
Registered Psychiatric Nurse
College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM)
A regulated profession in Manitoba. Some RPNs offer counselling privately; how plans handle their sessions varies.
- CCC
Canadian Certified Counsellor
Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA)
A national certification and a common way for Manitoba counsellors to show their standards while there's no provincial college.
At the time of writing, counselling therapy and psychotherapy aren't regulated in Manitoba. The Federation of Associations for Counselling Therapists in Manitoba (FACT-MB) is working toward regulation, and the CCPA lists the expected date as unknown.
So when a client asks whether a counsellor is covered, the true answer is that it depends on the plan's list. Some plans accept association credentials such as the CCC, and some list only regulated titles.
If you're a psychologist, one naming quirk is worth a line on your site: clients may not realize the Psychological Association of Manitoba is the regulator, and some mistake it for a voluntary membership group.
What your website should say about coverage
Start with your title, the body you're registered with, and a line on coverage. Then say where you see people: a Winnipeg office, a Brandon office, online across Manitoba, or some mix.
If you work in French, give your French page the same substance as your English one, fees and coverage included. A translated contact form on its own won't help anyone decide.
If you're enrolled with NIHB, a plain note helps: the program pays you directly, and eligible clients don't pay deductibles or co-payments. If you're not enrolled, leave it off.
I'm a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the Manitoba College of Social Workers, registration [number], seeing clients in Winnipeg and by video across Manitoba. Coverage depends on the client's plan, so before your first session, ask whether social work or counselling is included, how much is covered each year, and whether you'll need a referral.
Direct billing
Manitoba clients ask about direct billing as often as anyone. State whether you offer it, and for which plans; if you don't, describe the receipt you provide and when it arrives.
Some sessions are funded outside a workplace plan, for example through Manitoba Public Insurance after a collision, the Workers Compensation Board, or NIHB. Name only the ones you're actually registered or approved with.
When EAP sessions run out
Provincial and municipal governments, health organizations, universities, and Crown corporations employ many Manitobans, and EAPs are common among them. People reach the end of their EAP sessions and start searching again.
Make the next step obvious: a line saying you welcome clients after EAP, and that their extended health may cover more sessions. No EAP names needed.
Your Manitoba checklist
- Your title, regulator or association, and number, near your fees
- A line explaining that PAM is a regulator, if you're a psychologist
- Where you see people: office locations and online across Manitoba
- A French page with real content, if you offer services in French
- NIHB described only if you're an enrolled provider
- Receipts or direct billing explained
- MPI or WCB referrals mentioned only if you take them
Then run your site through the free nine-point website checklist for therapists.
Common questions
Are counsellors regulated in Manitoba?
Not yet. FACT-MB is working toward regulation, and no date has been set. Many counsellors hold the CCC through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.
Is the Psychological Association of Manitoba a regulator?
Yes. It registers psychologists and psychological associates in Manitoba, despite having “association” in its name.
Should my site be bilingual?
Only if you offer therapy in French. If you do, a full French page helps francophone clients in St. Boniface and elsewhere find you and understand their coverage.
Do NIHB mental health benefits cover counsellors?
The program centres on regulated providers such as psychologists, social workers, and psychiatric nurses. A certified counsellor can enrol only in limited cases, where no regulated providers are enrolled nearby.
