On an island this size, many clients hear your name from someone they know before they ever visit your website. When they do visit, they're usually checking two things: that you're properly registered, and whether their benefits will help pay. Answering both clearly turns a word-of-mouth referral into a booked session.
How people in Prince Edward Island search for covered therapy
Charlottetown and Summerside draw most searches, with Stratford, Cornwall, Montague, Souris, Kensington, and O'Leary close behind. Because everyone is within driving distance of somewhere, people often search for the whole province, so “PEI” itself belongs on your pages.
Search volume is small, which works in your favour. A single well-written fees page that says “Prince Edward Island”, names your credential, and answers the coverage question can be one of only a few pages that fits a given search.
Islanders value discretion, and in a small community some clients would rather not be seen in a waiting room. If you offer sessions by video, say so early, and mention that you see people from anywhere on the Island.

Which credentials plans cover in Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island brought counselling therapy under regulation more recently than its neighbours. Knowing the exact protected title helps you match the wording in a client's plan.
- CT
Counselling Therapist
College of Counselling Therapy of Prince Edward Island (CCTPEI), under the Regulated Health Professions Act
Regulated since August 1, 2021. The Island's regulations protect “counselling therapist” and “CT”, which differs from the RCT or LCT letters used in nearby provinces.
- CCC
Canadian Certified Counsellor
Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA)
A national certification many Island counsellors held before provincial regulation, and some still list. Show it next to your CT, not in place of it.
- RSW
Registered Social Worker
Prince Edward Island Social Work Registration Board (PEISWRB)
The Board keeps a separate Private Practice Roster, with its own application and endorsement. If you're on it, that's worth mentioning to clients.
- Psychologist
Psychologist
Prince Edward Island Psychologists Registration Board
The Board regulates the practice of psychology on the Island. Plans often reimburse psychology under its own yearly amount.
Because the CT title is newer, some clients and even some plan documents still describe counsellors in older terms. A client who has only ever heard “CCC” may not recognize “CT” on a receipt. Explain both on your fees page, so the client can read the right one to their insurer.
Clients who moved from Nova Scotia or New Brunswick sometimes look for an “RCT” or an “LCT” and don't find one. A sentence saying the Island's equivalent title is Counselling Therapist bridges that gap.
What your website should say about coverage
Keep your coverage section short and concrete: your credential, the regulator, your registration number, your fee, and what your receipt includes. Then add a small “before you book” box with the questions to ask an insurer.
Avoid lines like “most plans cover this”. On a small island, a single client whose claim is declined will tell others, and advertising rules expect accuracy anyway. Whether a session is reimbursed depends on each client's plan, and your page should say so.
I'm a Counselling Therapist (CT) registered with the College of Counselling Therapy of Prince Edward Island, registration number [your number]. Some extended health plans reimburse counselling therapy and some list only psychologists or social workers. Ask your insurer whether a CT is covered, what your yearly amount is, and whether you need a doctor's note.
Direct billing
If you submit claims for clients, say which method you use and whether the client pays anything at the session. Many Islanders will choose the practitioner who makes paying simpler.
If you don't direct-bill, one line explaining that clients pay and then claim with your receipt is all that's needed. Put it on the fees page and on your booking form.
When EAP sessions run out
Government and larger Island employers offer Employee Assistance Programs with a few short-term sessions. When those end, people look for someone local, or someone online, to keep going.
Health PEI also runs Open Access Counselling, walk-in sessions with no appointment or referral, and a Mental Health and Addictions Phone Line at 1-833-553-6983 that's answered around the clock. Naming these as options, and explaining how ongoing private sessions differ, is a respectful way to meet people between services.
Your Prince Edward Island checklist
- Your CT, RSW, or psychologist title, your regulator, and your registration number on the fees page
- A line explaining that CT is the Island's regulated counselling title
- Your CCC listed too, if you hold it, so clients who know that term recognize you
- The questions to ask an insurer, set out in a short “before you book” box
- Direct billing answered in one sentence on the fees page and booking form
- Whether you see people in person, by video anywhere on the Island, or both
- No coverage promises, no testimonials, and no superlatives
Then run your site through the free nine-point website checklist for therapists.
Common questions
Are sessions with a Counselling Therapist covered by benefits on PEI?
Some plans reimburse them and some don't. It depends on the plan and on how it words counselling. Your title and registration number are what the client's insurer needs to answer.
Why doesn't the Island use the RCT title like Nova Scotia?
Each province wrote its own regulations. On Prince Edward Island the protected title is Counselling Therapist, abbreviated CT, so use that on your site and receipts.
Is a small market worth an SEO effort?
Yes, because there's so little competition. A clear fees page and a page for each service you offer can cover most of what Islanders search for.
